Build a balanced list: reach, target, safety
Reach (roughly <15% acceptance)
Most of this dashboard's original 14 — Ivy-calibre and equivalent schools. Apply to several if you're a strong candidate, but don't build your whole list here; even outstanding applicants are declined at this rate for reasons that have nothing to do with their quality.
Target (roughly 15–40% acceptance)
Schools where your grades/profile sit at or above the middle of admitted students. This should be the largest part of your list — Northwestern, Duke, Boston University and several of the 6 newer additions sit here depending on your profile.
Safety / likely (over ~40–50% acceptance)
Schools you're confident of admission to and would be genuinely happy to attend — University of Arizona and SMU are examples on this list. A safety school you wouldn't actually choose isn't doing its job.
A workable rule of thumb: 2–3 safety, 4–6 target, and cap reach schools at roughly half your total list — applying to twenty reach schools doesn't meaningfully improve your odds and multiplies the essay workload for no real strategic benefit. Use the acceptance rate shown on each university card in the Universities tab to sort your own list into these three buckets.
The application timeline, strategically

Spring term, Year 12 — build your list & first SAT sitting
Research schools (Universities tab), sort them into reach/target/safety, and sit the SAT for the first time (see SAT & Testing). Start thinking about your personal statement topic — don't write it yet.

Summer before Year 13 — draft, don't perfect
Write your Common App personal statement and start "why us" supplements for your reach schools. A rough-but-honest first draft now is worth more than a polished draft in October.

September, Year 13 — lock in testing & recommenders
Second (and final, if possible) SAT sitting. Confirm your two teacher recommenders and your counselor reference, and give them real lead time — see "Recommendation letters" below.

October, Year 13 — finish early-round applications
Finalise essays and financial-aid forms (CSS Profile where required — see Visa & Funding) for every Nov 1 early round. Order transcripts early; school offices get backed up in November.

November–December — submit, then start Regular Decision essays
Submit Nov 1 rounds. Immediately start supplements for your January Regular Decision schools rather than waiting for early results.

January, Year 13 — final submissions
Submit remaining Regular Decision and UC applications by the Jan 1–15 cluster. This is the busiest point in the cycle — the Timeline tab exists mainly to get you through this stretch without missing something.

March–May — decide, then start the visa process
Compare offers and financial-aid packages, confirm enrolment by May 1, then start the F-1 visa process straight away (I-20 → SEVIS fee → DS-160 → interview) — see Visa & Funding. It easily takes longer than people expect.

Around 25 SAT test centres currently run in the UK, concentrated in London and the South East — participating schools vary by date, so always use the live test-centre search rather than a saved list. If you need a borrowed device for the digital SAT, request it roughly 30 days ahead.
Recommended timeline for UK & international applicants

Spring term, Year 12 — first sitting
Sit the SAT for the first time while you still have a full run at Year 13. This is about experience with the digital format as much as the score itself.

Late summer / autumn, Year 13 — second sitting
Most applicants retake in August–October of Year 13, aiming to lock in their best score well before the Nov 1 and January deadline clusters. Roughly 90% of US universities superscore, so separate strong sections across sittings still count.

Register 2–4 weeks ahead — earlier if you can
Standard registration typically closes two to four weeks before test day; late registration stays open to about 11 days before for an extra fee, with less centre availability. Don't wait for the last window during application season — UK centres fill up.

Check each university's own "scores received by" date
A test date being before a deadline isn't enough — scores need time to arrive and be matched to your application. Build in a buffer, especially for Nov 1 and Jan 1–15 rounds.

Leave room for a third sitting only if you need it
A third attempt (e.g. December or March) is there if you need it, but most UK applicants do their strongest work across two sittings — more attempts rarely add much once you're superscoring.

Visa & funding
The F-1 visa process and how financial aid really works — the same steps apply whichever of these offers you accept. This applies equally to UK applicants and other international students.
F-1 student visa, step by step

Confirm your place & get your I-20
Once you accept an offer (and confirm funding, if you're on financial aid), the university's international student office issues Form I-20 — the document that makes you eligible to apply for the visa. This is usually ready a few weeks after your enrollment deposit.

Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee
$350 for F-1 students, paid online at fmjfee.com. Keep the payment receipt — you'll need it for your interview.

Complete the DS-160 & pay the visa fee
The DS-160 is the standard US visa application form, completed online. It comes with a $185 MRV (visa application) fee. Have your I-20, passport and travel history to hand.

Book your interview
UK applicants interview in London or Belfast; other nationalities book through their nearest US embassy or consulate. Wait times vary by location and season — book as soon as your I-20 arrives rather than waiting. Check current wait times and book at ustraveldocs.com.

Attend the interview
Bring your passport, I-20, DS-160 confirmation page, SEVIS receipt, acceptance letter and financial evidence. Most decisions are given on the day; passport return with visa typically takes 3–5 working days.

Travel — up to 30 days before term starts
Your visa lets you enter the US no earlier than 30 days before the program start date on your I-20. Plan arrival with enough buffer for orientation and setting up (bank account, phone, housing).
How funding actually works across these schools
Need-blind, meets full need (no merit aid, but generous need-based awards)
Harvard · Princeton · Yale · Stanford — admission doesn't consider your ability to pay, and if admitted, demonstrated financial need is met in full. For many international families this is worth more than a fixed merit scholarship elsewhere.
Need-aware for international applicants (apply for aid early — budgets are limited)
Penn · UChicago · Georgetown · Northwestern · Duke · Boston University — your ability to pay can factor into the admission decision for international applicants, and aid budgets run out, so submit aid applications at the same time as your admission application, never later.
Real merit-scholarship routes for an international applicant
Duke's Karsh International Scholarship and Boston University's Trustee / Presidential Scholarships are the two genuine merit-aid opportunities on this list open to international students, both awarded through the ordinary application (no separate form). Everywhere else on this list, merit aid for international students is effectively unavailable.
Little to no institutional aid for international students
UC Berkeley · UCLA · UC San Diego · University of Washington — budget for near full-cost attendance; UW does offer small, partial merit top-ups like the Purple and Gold Scholarship.

Free, intensive support (including a summer school in the US) for UK state-school students from lower-income backgrounds aiming at highly selective US universities.

Fulbright's flagship scholarships are for postgraduate study, not undergraduate — but worth knowing about for a Master's down the line, and their EducationUSA arm helps undergrads now.
